Urgent referrals

Please phone the clinic on 02 9424 9999 to discuss urgent or same-day assessment rather than sending the referral alone. If the clinic is closed or the patient cannot be assessed promptly, direct them to the nearest emergency department.
The clinic (level 3) and the day surgery (level 4) are co-located at Vision Eye Institute Chatswood, so urgent retinal referrals can be assessed and, where appropriate, operated on promptly, subject to theatre availability.

Conditions and procedures
Complex cataract and complication management
Referral experience
- Dr Chen combines extensive cataract surgery experience with fellowship training and an active retinal surgery practice.
- Other ophthalmologists regularly refer patients to him for management of cataract surgery complications, including retained lens material and dislocated intraocular lenses.
Cataract and retinal care
- Posteriorly displaced lens material and other complications requiring pars plana vitrectomy commonly need referral to a retinal surgeon.
- For patients whose cataract surgeon does not perform retinal surgery, these complications can mean referral to another surgeon and a further operation.
- Dr Chen can provide both the cataract and retinal components of care, including combined surgery where indicated.
Theatre and team
- Dr Chen’s cataract operations take place in theatres equipped for both cataract and retinal surgery, with nurses trained in retinal procedures and experienced with the specialist equipment.
- Selected intraoperative complications can therefore be managed in the same sitting where clinically appropriate, potentially avoiding a further specialist referral and a separate procedure.
